Dryness and frizz: what is actually happening

2026-10-29 21:26:18 · 5 min read

Frizz is usually about moisture balance and cuticle condition, not a lack of oil alone. Here is how to tell the difference and what to change first.

Dryness versus frizz

Dry hair lacks moisture. Frizz is what you see when the cuticle — the outer layer of overlapping cells — is raised or uneven, so light scatters and strands stop lying together. Hair can be both dry and frizzy, but the fixes are not identical.

Common contributors

What tends to help

1. Condition every wash. Conditioner smooths the cuticle and reduces friction between strands.

2. Use a leave-in on damp hair if your hair is porous or curly — it slows moisture loss.

3. Lower the water temperature. Warm water is enough; very hot water strips surface lipids.

4. Dry gently. A microfibre towel or an old cotton T-shirt reduces friction compared with a rough towel.

5. Protect before heat. A heat protectant and a moderate temperature reduce further cuticle lifting.

What does not help

When to get it checked

Dryness and frizz are cosmetic concerns. If you also have scalp redness, scaling that does not improve, or itching that keeps you awake, ask a clinician or dermatologist — that may be a skin condition rather than a product problem.
