Reducing hair breakage: a practical guide

2026-10-29 21:26:18 · 5 min read

Breakage happens when the strand snaps. Most causes are mechanical or heat related, which means most of them are adjustable.

Breakage versus shedding

Shed hair has a small pale bulb at the root end and comes from the follicle. Broken hair is a short piece with a blunt or split end. If you are seeing many short pieces, you are dealing with breakage, not loss from the scalp.

The usual causes

A simple plan

1. Detangle with conditioner in your hair, starting at the ends and working up.

2. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers on wet hair; save brushes for dry hair.

3. Choose lower heat settings and keep the dryer moving.

4. Alternate styles so tension is not always in the same place.

5. Trim split ends when they appear; a split end travels up the strand.

Realistic expectations

Conditioners and masks can make hair feel stronger and reduce further snapping, but they cannot fuse a split end back together. Consistency matters more than any single product.
