Hair shedding and thinning: when to seek help

2026-10-29 21:26:18 · 7 min read · Reviewed

Some shedding is normal. Sudden, heavy or patchy loss, or loss with scalp symptoms, deserves professional assessment.

Normal shedding

Most people lose some hairs daily as part of the growth cycle. You may notice more shedding after washing if you wash less often, simply because more hairs are released at once.

Patterns that deserve attention

What a clinician may do

A doctor or dermatologist will usually take a history, examine the scalp, and may order blood tests (for example iron stores, thyroid function, vitamin D) or examine hairs under a microscope. Treatment depends entirely on the cause.

What this app will do

HairCare Companion helps you notice and record patterns, gives you education about common causes, and — if you report warning signs — prioritises a clear recommendation to seek professional care. It does not diagnose.
