Dandruff and flaking: what is normal and what is not

Flaking has several causes, from a dry scalp to seborrhoeic dermatitis. The right response depends on which one you have.

Not all flakes are the same

What usually helps

For a dry scalp: wash a little less often, lower the water temperature, and use a gentle conditioner on the scalp if it feels tight.

For seborrhoeic dermatitis: medicated shampoos containing ingredients such as ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione or salicylic acid are commonly used. Follow the product instructions, leave the shampoo on the scalp for the stated contact time, and give it several weeks.

Important safety notes

What traditional remedies can and cannot do

Practices such as oiling the scalp are widely used and can improve comfort and reduce dryness. They are not a proven treatment for inflammatory skin conditions, and heavy oils can make seborrhoeic dermatitis worse for some people. Treat them as comfort measures, not cures.
